Happy Birthday Thomas!!!!

Dear Thomas,

Mommy is very sorry that for the first year of your life you had no pictures or decorations in your room. Mommy was six months pregnant when we moved into this house, and I spent my end days of pregnancy enjoying the holidays and over indulging in food. There was just little time and energy left over for decorating. Then, I spent the first ten months of your life taking care of you around the clock! Once you started walking around ten months, I knew you officially “needed” me to finish unpacking everything so that you could get all of your toys out of my living room floor because I was tired of looking and tripping over them have your “playroom”…aka, our sunroom/Bible study room/previous storage room. It serves multi-purposes in this household. Anyways, once I got that unpacked and we moved all of your toys into the new playroom, I was on a roll and decided to keep going. So, when you were around 11 months old, I went down to Bob Shapiro’s studio and ordered your newborn photos….yes, I said newborn photos. I bet they thought I was a quack taking almost a year to order photos..who does that!? Moving forward now.

The winter months are long and hard on your Daddy. You see, he is a rambling man. He needs wide open spaces and grease beneath his finger nails to feel alive.  He starts going a little stir crazy during the winter months. So, I put him to work to keep him busy and me sane. I saw these gutter shelves on my friend, Britt’s, blog. You should totally go check her blog out. She is beyond crafty and has the most decorative eye I’ve ever seen. She is frugal and modern. Most importantly, she is the mother to two sweet little babies in Ethiopia that she is going to meet for the first time very, very soon. I hope she lets me pinch their little cheeks when they all get back. These gutter shelves are in their nursery, too. Anyways, Daniel and I went to work creating, hanging, and decorating your room, sweet one-year-old-baby-boy-of-mine-you’re-growing-up-too-fast-Thomas!!!! Here are a few of our finishing touches:

Aunt Katie gave me the two frames on the outside. I love them. They are so “baby-ish” and “nursery-ish” to me.

This is a wall decal I ordered off of etsy.

And to all of the Moms out there, does your child eat his crib, too? We have the little gummy protectors on parts of it, but they don’t stick very well. The way Thomas’s crib is curved makes it hard to stick anything to it. My child just sits in there and eats away at the wood. Come to think of it, Lady loves eating wood, too. What is up with my children!?

One final thought before we move on to the Big Birthday Weekend…I love this little stool. Daniel had one with his name on it when he was little, and now Thomas has one, too. It’s such a classic item. I can’t wait to see him stand on it to wash his hands and brush his teeth.

And now I’m going to talk about one of the most important days of my life since Thomas was born: his first birthday. I was surprised at how sentimental I felt on that day. It was such a day of reflection and rejoicing over the past year and of  just  life and health in general!  In my heart I felt a lot of gratitude and thanksgiving to the Lord as I recounted all of the ways that He had provided for our family over the past year…spiritually, emotionally, and physically. We have been tried and tested, and weary and burdened at times, but the Lord has never left us. We have been rescued and redeemed! He is the Good Provider. Thomas’s first birthday just brought up an appreciation for everything God had done in our lives this past year and all of the ways that He is growing and changing us.

We had only family and “like family” at Thomas’s birthday party. I wanted the day to be very relaxed and intimate with our friends and family. I didn’t want to be so busy running in a hundred different directions trying to put together the perfect birthday party that I didn’t have time to truly celebrate with my little man. We had pizza, wings, salad, cake, and ice cream! We had a frog theme since Thomas loves, loves, loves his little Frog and sleeps with it underneath his arm every night.

We were blessed to have my entire family come up for the whole weekend! It was so fun to watch the cousins play together

My little family!

Aunt Francie got Thomas this little fire engine car for his birthday, and he loves it! We actually kind of “hide” it from him sometimes by putting it in another room and closing the door because we get so worn out from pushing him in it! Our legs and backs need a break! I bet we’ve been around the living room a hundred times in it. We are such awful parents, aren’t we!?Smile

It came with a little fireman hat that Thomas was of course adorable in! We would put it on him…

And he would take it right back off and hand it back to us!

Thanks for the ride, Aunt Francie!!

Thomas loved it so much, he cried when we took him off it! It was time for the party to begin though….

Thomas was thrilled that I tied balloons to his high chair.

Mary Frances had just had her birthday party a few months ago, so she knew all about opening presents!

She also is a little beggar when it comes to food. Once she realized everyone had a bowl of cake and ice cream, the begging was on!…

….even from people she didn’t really know, like Aunt Heather!…who has recently and affectionately been named Aunt Ha Ha.

In other news from February, we celebrated Valentine’s Day with our small group from church. We all got sitters and had an adult dinner and played a couples game afterwards. We had a very tasty Italian dinner and great conversations. Thomas stayed home with Aunt Summer, Uncle Scott, and his little buddy Kennedy.

Thomas 1st Bday 344

Thomas picked me some fresh flowers the other day. He and his Grandmama  T had been out and came back with these….I hope it’s just the first of many fresh flowers Thomas picks for the women he loves!

Thomas 1st Bday 349

Daniel, Thomas, and I ventured out one Saturday to spend the lovely afternoon in Piedmont Park having a picnic with some friends of ours, Jen and Alex. It was sunny and just what a soul needed after a long, cold month of playing inside. She talks all about it on her blog.

We are having an easy day around the house today. Daniel sprayed his wheat this morning. I went for a run. Daniel and Thomas went to the church BBQ, and Thomas came back with a balloon tied to his overalls. It was adorable. He had his first taste of stew and loved it. I don’t know what goes on with my child when I’m not around. I do know that it’s 3:30pm, and he still isn’t asleep. We’re going to a birthday cookout tonight at James and Leigh’s so he really needs this last nap! Looks like I’ve got some work to doSmile

January 2011

Let’s start with the most exciting news of the season: Francie got a Snuggie, and she loves it! Seriously, it was all she could do to take the blanket off when she showered. This is basically how she looked the entire Christmas holiday!

Jan2011 002

We decided to do Christmas with my family on New Years weekend. It worked out wonderfully this year. We were able to stay at our home for the Christmas weekend, and it was so joyful and relaxing not having to travel. Then, we got to do all the merry celebrations all over again the following weekend (New Years) with my sisters and parents (and husbands and babies, of course!)

Mary Frances’s morning hair-do was quite intriguing to Thomas. He couldn’t really understand what was going on. Doesn’t she look like an aerobic instructor from the 80s!? So adorable.

Jan2011 006Jan2011 010

Speaking of The Fray, she is going through a little stage of “stranger anxiety”, and she was not so excited to be spending the weekend with us a bunch of strangersSmile

All of the Grandbabies wore their matching Christmas outfits that Mimi made them. They were so precious! Thomas’s outfit was a little short on him by the time Christmas came…apparently, he went through a growth spurt sometime between when Mimi got his measurements and when it was time to wear the outfit.

Jan2011 020

The boys all got guns from Daddy Tom. Can you tell how excited Scott was!? PricelessSmile

Jan2011 027Jan2011 028Jan2011 050Jan2011 054

Since we were doing a “man pic”, we had to put Thomas in it! He is, after all, one of the boys…

Jan2011 059

Mimi and Daddy Tom helped T get steady on his feet so he wouldn’t fall in Charlie’s yard….

Jan2011 063

And of course we did the annual Childs Family Matching Pajamas Pic!

Jan2011 087

The rest of January was spent around our home. It has been so nice to have 4-6 weekends straight where we weren’t traveling! We have been working on a lot of little decorating projects around the house and practicing saying “Uh Oh!” with Thomas a lot. Oh yeah, and cleaning up his big little messes all throughout the day!

Jan2011 092Jan2011 093

But this face makes it all worth it:

Jan2011 098Jan2011 102

When T got bored with his toys, we would push him around the living room in a diaper box! That is his and Daddy’s new game.

Jan2011 107

And while I’m doing such a random post, let me continue being completely random and tell you how yummy this omelette was!  It’s a weight watchers recipe I found online…delicious! I’m planning on making one for my family when they come up next weekend for Thomas’s birthday party!

Jan2011 109

And I am still surviving and thriving off of my smoothies. Except, I’ve added a little boost to them. And now they’re green smoothies. Yum. Don’t knock till ya try it! You can not even taste the greens in there. My sister, Katie, talked me into adding some greens to my smoothies, and I’m never going back. If you’re into smoothies, you really should try it.

Jan2011 088

In other random news, Daniel’s mother (Mama T) gave me some of Daniel’s clothes from when he was a baby. These are Daniel’s overalls. And Thomas is so so so adorable in them. I think I dressed him in them like three days in a row. I just couldn’t get enough.

Jan2011 118Jan2011 120

Thomas realizing that he has some big shoes to fill if he’s going to be as great of a man as his Daddy is!

Jan2011 125

Sometimes it trips him up just thinking about it….

Jan2011 135

And he fusses. And clings to Momma….

Jan2011 141Jan2011 167

Then recovers….and all is well in life again.

Jan2011 143

And then it gets even better when Daddy comes home! This was Thomas’s first time wearing his overalls, and we were so pleasantly surprised when Daddy came home from work and was wearing his, too!

Jan2011 164

And then, Papa Joe stopped by, and he was also wearing overalls! Which really isn’t that much of a surprise because I think he wears them everyday except Sunday morningsSmile Just 3 generations of overall wearing men!

Jan2011 174

Matching his Daddy and Papa Joe just thrills Thomas….

Jan2011 181

Thomas also found his little New Testament bible and loved it.  It is his favorite book by far. I think he loves its little size. There’s nothing cuter than Thomas walking around in his overalls and carrying his Bible.

Jan2011 194Jan2011 190Jan2011 199

And speaking of faith, this little girl needs your prayers. She has some kind of sore on her paw/underneath her nail, and we are hoping that it doesn’t get infected! She has just not been herself lately. She’s even turned down some treats! We know Lady really doesn’t feel well if she’s not eating her treats. And we also know she’s too bad to go to the vet, so we’re hoping that this clears up on its own!

Jan2011 223

I’m thinking of taking some of Thomas’s one year portraits in this outfit:

Jan2011 202Jan2011 211Jan2011 221

I love dressing him in collard shirts. He looks like such a little man in them!

Jan2011 234Jan2011 236Jan2011 237

And I will be glad when this little man learns to use a napkinSmile

Jan2011 250Jan2011 253

***Disclaimer: After sending this picture to my family with the caption, “Are y’all ready for my par-tay!?” I got Summer and Katie lots of laughs and concerns about why his teeth look so crooked. He was just cutting that second top tooth, so it hadn’t even cut all the way through. As for why his top teeth look like they don’t line up with his bottom teeth?? Well, let’s just hope it was the way he was holding his jawSmile

Well, it’s off to Thomas’s  Friday morning music class! We are looking forward to putting together some shelves we made for the sunroom this evening and getting in bed early tonight. I’m running the Angel House 5k in the morning even though I am totally unprepared. My running has taken a back seat lately to the freezing cold temperatures. Deborah and I are still trying to do several morning runs a week, but it has not been working out so great lately. Either the rain of the morning temps being in the teens cancels out our runs. I’ve been doing good to get in two a week! So, tomorrow morning should be interesting. Wish me luckSmile
